5 (basic) things to do in Davis, CA

I transferred to UC Davis last fall and really struggled finding things to do. Davis is often known as a boring and empty cow town, but honestly, there are lots of cool things to do. In this post, I’ll be recommending the “basic” places that I’ve actually been to, but stay tuned for a future post that will include secret and hidden places to go!

1. Sunflower field

Most people don’t know about the sunflower field that’s in Davis, and end up driving ten minutes to the Dixon sunflower field. No need! Just drive straight down John Jones Road and it will be on your left.

Tips:

  • For the best lighting in pictures, go during sunrise or sunset. The sun will be too harsh in the middle of the day!
  • If you’re allergic or afraid of bees, definitely pass on sunflower fields. There were a lot of bees everywhere!
  • The BEST time to go is in June and July, the sunflowers are pretty much dead after that.

2. Arboretum

The Arboretum is a Davis classic, but recently I’ve been surprised with how many people haven’t been or only been once or twice. The best time to go is in the Spring because of the blooming flowers and warm weather, but it’s beautiful year round.

3. Manetti Shrem Museum of Art

I visited the museum three months ago, and I was shocked to find out that admission is completely free. You aren’t allowed to bring anything inside with you besides your phone, so they have free lockers available in case you have a purse or backpack. The artwork is breathtaking, and they have a free arts & crafts room for you to create your own art!

4. Farmer’s Market

Were you even in Davis if you didn’t go to the Farmer’s Market? It’s open Wednesdays in the afternoon/evening and Saturdays from 8am-1pm. They offer an insane amount of organic fruits, vegetables, pastries, eggs, honey, meats, seafood, and more. It’s also a great place to hang out with friends and try the delicious food trucks!

5. Vini Wine Bar

If you’re a wine drinker, you should definitely try Vini Wine Bar. Although I’ve personally never tried their wine, I heard from my friends that they offer great options. I did try their cheese platter and it was amazing! Vini is super fun because you set a limit that you want to spend, they give you a personal card with money on it, then you go around the store and swipe your card to try different types of wine. The price is written on all of the wine wine as well as information on where it came from. It’s basically a fun twist on wine tasting!
